Sri Sankara Jayanthi celeberations - 2010
Dr. S. Ramakrishnan is professor and head of the biochemistry research dept. at the Vision Research Foundation in Sankara Nethralaya. He is 80 but you will hardly find a grey strand in his hair.
During his 15 years with Sankara Nethralaya, Dr. Ramakrishnan’s focus has been on research. His presentation on the beneficial effect of oral supplement of amino acids in the control of diabetes and ocular diseases won wide acclaim. Most of his 51 year career has been devoted to teaching MBBS, MD and PhD students.He has authored several papers and books and they are approved text books for medical students on Biochemistry & Ocular Biochemistry. Ramakrishnan was born in Dhalapathisamudram village, near Tirunelveli.
He majored in chemistry and graduated with first class. He was a topper throughout his academic life. For four years, unable to get a PG seat in Presidency or Loyola, he worked as demonstrator in chemistry at the MDT Hindu college, Titunelvli, St.John’s college, Palayamkotta, and VOC, Tuticorin. Finally, he got a seat in Presidency and he completed his MA with the top rank in the University of Madras. At Presidency, he would spend the late evenings in the college, doing research.
Sri. Ramakrishnan was selected as assistant lecturer by the Madras Educational Subordinate Services and posted to the Madurai Medical College where he spent eight years.
He registered for his PhD with the Madras University; -his thesis was on riboflavin and enzymes. At various stages in his career, he passed three UPSC interviews to be selected and posted each time to the medical college, Pondicherry, as lecturer, reader and professor in biochemistry. He spent 22 years there.
Dr. Ramakrishnan , who received the Fellow of the academy of Medical Sciences degree from the National Academy of Medical Sciences and is a member of Advisory Board of several medical associations.
He is married to Sow.Meenakshi and has three daughters-M/s.Rukmani, Nityakalyani and Jayashankari.
Ever since he became a resident of virugambakkam in 1991, he has taken an active part at the Hari Hara temple in Chinmaya Nagar.
He is also a fluent speaker in Sanskrit and Tamil. He is one of the several elite personalities associated with The Samajam and made several discourses on various aspects of Hindu philosophy. He gives discourses on “Srimad Bhagavatham”.
The current one is on Sri Adhi Sankara, as part of Sri Sankara Jayanthi celebrations, conducted by Sri Gurupaduka Samajam, Chennai -92.
